TOLERANCE ZONE



Excavators shall request utility locates not less than two (2) business days or more than ten (10) business days before excavation, except for emergencies (RCW 19.122.030).

The use of stakes, paint or other clearly identifiable materials shall be used to show the field location of underground facilities, in accordance with the current color code standard of the APWA. Markings shall include identification letters indicating the specific type, and size, of the underground facility. (RCW 19.122.030)

An excavator shall use reasonable care to avoid damaging underground facilities, as specified in the law. (RCW 19.122.040)

The utility should mark the size of the facility in inches on the surface or on the stake, if practical. If a utility has more than one facility buried in close proximity, it should be indicated also.

The excavator should dig by hand a distance of twenty-four (24) inches from the edge of the facility on both sides of the facility until the facility is exposed to prevent damages.(RCW 19.122.040)
